Hormonal Control of the Cat's Cycle - The Pill for Cats

Induction of Ovulation

ensure fertility/limit matings/postpone next oestrus 6-7wks

repeated mating with vasectomised tomcat (if available) or repeated second-long vaginal stimulation (moist cotton bud) or vigorous patting on back near tail whilst gripping scruff- 4 or more within 4hrs for 4days - beware the aggressive response!

HCG 250iu im sid on each of first two days oestrus

GnRH (Cystorelin) (must be natural) 25ug im on second day of oestrus

Oestrogen Complications

bone-marrow suppression 6-8wks after Rx

pyometra 6-8wks after Rx

prolonged oestrus for 1 week

Induction of Oestrus

pathological anoestrus

healthy, wellfed, vaccinated, suitable photoperiod (14h) for last 2-4wks & exclude pseudopregnancy - oestrus signs & cytology 2*/wk for 6-7wks

expose to cycling queens

FSH-P 2mg sid max 5d or till first signs of oestrus and induce ovulation by natural frequent mating on first 3d oestrus

or PMSG 100iu im then 50iu im 7d later, and induce ovulation by natural frequent mating on first 3d oestrus

important never exceed dose - very sensitive and will easily cause severe overstimulation of ovaries - cysts.

lower doses may be effective

Endometritis

Cystic endometrial hyperplasia

Mammary hyperplasia

Significant risk of mammary cancers

Diabetes mellitus

Acromegaly

Hyperadrenocortiscm

Hypertension

Lipaemia

Injection site skin atrophy and hairloss

May not prevent oestrus or contraception

Suppression of Oestrus

first 1-2d oestrus, will not suppress immediately and still fertile ie keep away from tomcats

Megesterol acetate 5mg/cat sid 3d then 2.5-5mg/cat once weekly up to 10wks

MPA 2.5mg/cat sid prn

Prevention of Oestrus

OVH (SPAY)

depot progestagens

never in a breeding queen - uterine pathology

always in anoestrus

try and avoid them if you can

MPA inj 50mg sq q6m

proligestone 100mg sq q(3+n)m where n=number given till = 5m

mibelerone & Ovaban are only approved contraceptives in US

others are available in other countries

Mibelerone Complications

vaginal discharge

clitoral enlargement

anal gland inspissation

ovarian fibromas

masculinisation of female foetuses

anabolic

toxic to cats

Postponement of Oestrus

Induce ovulation

Start anoestrus/interoestrus, breed second oestrus after Rx

Megesterol acaetate 2.5mg/cat sid up to 2m if started in interoestrus, 2.5mg/cat q7d up to 18m if started in anoestrus

MPA 2.5mg/cat/day as long as nec, unpredictable return to oestrus


Misalliance

OVH (SPAY)

Confirm pregnancy at 3wks, abort with PGF2a, or cabergoline 25ug/cat/day po 5d (1.65ug/kg sq sid 5d) with fewer side effects

PGF2a Protocol

1st inj 25ug/kg sq then 250ug/kg sq bid till all foetus aborted min 4d

(25ug/kg sq tid 11d may be effective)

Side effects - excessive grooming, vomition, salivation, panting, bronchospasm, diarrhea, restlessness, tachycardia for 60mins post inj.

Pregnant women, asthmatics not to handle, wear gloves

Hospitalise cat - this is not a good thing to do on an outpatient basis.
