Manipulation of the Oestrus Cycle in the Queen
Induction of Ovulation |
-
ensure fertility/limit matings/postpone next oestrus 6-7wks
-repeated
mating with vasectomised tomcat (if available) or repeated second-long
vaginal stimulation (moist cotton bud) or vigorous patting on back near
tail whilst gripping scruff- 4 or more within 4hrs for 4days - beware
the aggressive response!
-
HCG 250iu im sid on each of first two days oestrus
-GnRH (Cystorelin) (must be natural) 25ug im on second day of oestrus |
Oestrogen Complications
-
bone-marrow suppression 6-8wks after Rx
-
pyometra 6-8wks after Rx
-
prolonged oestrus for 1 week |
|
Induction of Oestrus
pathological anoestrus |
-
healthy,
wellfed, vaccinated, suitable photoperiod (14h) for last 2-4wks &
exclude pseudopregnancy - oestrus signs & cytology 2*/wk for 6-7wks
-
expose to cycling queens
-
FSH-P 2mg sid max 5d or till first signs of oestrus and induce ovulation by natural frequent mating on first 3d oestrus
-
or PMSG 100iu im then 50iu im 7d later, and induce ovulation by natural frequent mating on first 3d oestrus
important never exceed dose - very sensitive and will easily cause severe overstimulation of ovaries - cysts.
lower doses may be effective |
Progestagen Complications
Pyometra
Endometritis
Cystic endometrial hyperplasia
Mammary hyperplasia
Significant risk of mammary cancers
Diabetes mellitus
Acromegally
Hyperadrenocortiscm
Hypertension
Lipaemia
Injection site skin atrophy and hairloss
May not prevent oestrus or contraception |
|
Suppression of Oestrus |
first 1-2d oestrus, will not suppress immediately and still fertile ie keep away from tomcats
Megesterol acetate 5mg/cat sid 3d then 2.5-5mg/cat once weekly up to 10wks
MPA 2.5mg/cat sid prn |
|
|
Prevention of Oestrus |
OVH (SPAY)
depot progestagens
-
never in a breeding queen - uterine pathology
-
always in anoetsru
-
try and avoid them if you can
MPA inj 50mg sq q6m
proligestone 100mg sq q(3+n)m where n=number given till = 5m
mibelerone & Ovaban are only approved contraceptives in US
others are available in other countries
|
Mibelerone Complications
vaginal discharge
clitoral enlargement
anal gland inspissation
ovarian fibromas
masculinisation of female foetuses
anabolic
toxic to cats |
|
Postponement of Oestrus |
Induce ovulation
Start anoestrus/interoestrus, breed second oestrus after Rx
Megesterol acaetate 2.5mg/cat sid up to 2m if started in interoestrus, 2.5mg/cat q7d up to 18m if started in anoestrus
MPA 2.5mg/cat/day as long as nec, unpredictable return to oestrus |
|
|
Misalliance |
OVH (SPAY)
Confirm pregnancy at 3wks, abort with PGF2a, or cabergoline 25ug/cat/day po 5d (1.65ug/kg sq sid 5d) with fewer side effects |
PGF2a Protocol
1st inj 25ug/kg sq then 250ug/kg sq bid till all foetus aborted min 4d
(25ug/kg sq tid 11d may be effective)
Side
